IBM Controller is available in two interfaces: IBM Controller Web and IBM Controller Classic. A common question we hear from customers is: what’s the difference between them, and which users need which interface?

IBM Controller Web #

IBM Controller Web is a browser-based interface designed with usability and accessibility in mind. It provides a modern experience for users involved in data submission, review, and reconciliation.

Controller Web is most commonly used by:

• Users submitting financial data

• Users responsible for submissions across multiple companies

• Finance users focused on completing a clean, on-time close rather than system administration

It is intentionally designed for business users, not technical administrators.

IBM Controller Web offers  features that are not available in IBM Controller Classic, including:

• Mobile access.
• Data upload, account and intercompany reconciliation and  journal entry in an interactive workflow
• Intercompany reconciliation in the reporting company currency.
• A reporting status window that fully integrates with the submission workflow and consolidation processing
• Clear visibility of timelines and submission deadlines

IBM Controller Classic #

IBM Controller Classic is the rich-client desktop application and remains essential for users performing more advanced consolidation and system administration tasks.

It is typically used by:

• Group finance teams

• System administrators

• Power users responsible for complex consolidation logic

IBM Controller Classic provides deeper technical and functional control, including:

• System maintenance such as company, account and form structure amendments.
• Consolidation tasks including intercompany elimination, investment elimination, cash flow and group adjustments.
•  Advanced business rules and advanced formula calculations
• User and Data Security maintenance.
• Integration with IBM Planning Analytics for financial planning and analysis using Controller data

While powerful, Classic is less intuitive for occasional users and is therefore not typically used for day-to-day data

submission.
