# How to: Check whether a dimension exists in Planning Analytic

When building a [Turbo Integrator (TI)](https://www.aramar.co.uk/knowledge-share/ibm-planning-analytics/how-to-create-a-turbo-integrator-ti-process-in-ibm-planning-analytics/) process in[IBM Planning Analytics](https://www.aramar.co.uk/ibm-planning-analytics/), you may want to check whether a dimension already exists before your process continues.

The **DimensionExists** function makes this simple. It checks for a specified dimension and returns a value that you can use to determine what your process should do next.

---

### How does DimensionExists work?

The `DimensionExists` function returns:

- **1** if the dimension exists
- **0** if the dimension does not exist

This means you can use it within an `IF` statement to control what happens next in your TI process.

---

### How do I check whether a dimension exists?

In your Turbo Integrator process, use:

`DimensionExists('Dimension Name');`

For example, to check whether a dimension called **Accounting Line** exists:

`DimensionExists('Accounting Line');`

---

### How do I create the dimension if it doesn't exist?

You can combine `DimensionExists` with `DimensionCreate`:

```
IF (DimensionExists('Accounting Line') = 0);
    DimensionCreate('Accounting Line');
ENDIF;
```

This checks for the **Accounting Line** dimension. If it doesn't exist, Planning Analytics will create it before the process continues.

This can be particularly useful when building automated TI processes, as it allows the process to check that the dimension it needs is available before attempting to use it.
